Two things drive most of the calls down here, and neither is what people expect.

The first is the beach lots at dusk. Cars sit along Father Capodanno Boulevard and by the FDR Boardwalk with a dome light, a hatch or a set of headlights left on longer than anyone intended, and by the time the sun is down the battery is flat in a lot that is emptying out fast.

The second is corrosion, and it is genuinely a local factor rather than a talking point. Salt air off the water works on exposed battery terminals year-round in the streets closest to the boardwalk. This is some of the easiest ground to reach on the Island. Hylan Boulevard runs the length of it, Midland Avenue cuts down to the water, and Father Capodanno Boulevard runs along the front — all flat, all wide, none of the hill or one-way problems that slow us down on the North Shore.

For the hospital lots we come in off Seaview Avenue. For anything by the water it is Father Capodanno or the boardwalk parking directly. If you are near the edge of Miller Field, say so — that boundary is easy to describe two different ways.

What corrosion looks like before it strands you

If you park near the water, look at your battery posts every few months. White, blue or green crust building up around a terminal is the warning, and it is worth catching early because the fix at that stage is cleaning rather than a tow-out of a beach lot at nine at night.

Two other things worth knowing on this stretch. A battery case that looks swollen or split is finished, and should not be jumped or charged. And a car that has flooded at any point deserves a proper look at the battery tray and cable ends, because corrosion below the terminal does the same job out of sight.
